NORFOLK, Va. — A New York law enforcement official is reportedly sheltering a fugitive relative in Virginia, despite her history of run-ins with police.
Nakia Thompson, 36, who is related to state Attorney General Letitia James, is currently a fugitive in North Carolina. She is wanted for not adhering to her parole terms after being arrested in Winston-Salem back in 2011.
In that instance, she faced serious charges, including malicious conduct by a prisoner—considered a felony—as well as assaulting a government official and resisting arrest, according to court documentation.
Since 2020, Thompson has been living in a home owned by James in Norfolk, Virginia. This situation has become a focal point in the ongoing legal troubles surrounding the Attorney General.
Prosecutors have accused James of misrepresenting details on his mortgage application when purchasing the house, allegedly claiming it was a vacation property not intended for rental, but now it appears that there were tenants living there.
A report by the New York Times indicated that Thompson testified to a federal grand jury in Virginia that she lived with her children in the home without paying rent to James.
Before relocating to Virginia, Thompson amassed a lengthy criminal record in Winston-Salem.
Back in 2006, she was charged with three counts of assaulting government officials and also faced a probation violation misdemeanor. That same year, she was also charged with theft.
In 2008, Thompson was arrested for a separate bail forfeiture related to a prior case.
In February 2011, she received a citation for driving without a valid license and for having a registration plate that wasn’t properly installed. Failing to appear for a court hearing in April led to a disposition hearing years later, in 2019.
Later in 2011, she was able to deny the charges concerning the assault on a government employee and resisting arrest, ultimately receiving a 60-day jail sentence.
Subsequently, the felony charge for malicious conduct was dropped.
New details have emerged, indicating that Thompson fled North Carolina to Virginia with her three children.
A spokesperson for the North Carolina Department of Corrections revealed that Thompson is classified as a fugitive for supposedly evading her probation officer’s supervision.
“She was on probation for misdemeanor charges of assault, battery, and trespassing. Due to the nature of the offenses, the District Attorney has classified this case as non-extradable,” they noted.
“If she returns to North Carolina, she could be apprehended, and the court may activate her suspended sentence.”
