The uncle of the murdered UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson is calling for Luigi Mangione to receive life in prison, after Mangione confessed to the crime and pleaded guilty to federal charges on Friday.
Bruce Thompson, who is the brother of Brian’s father, expressed his hope that the judge would impose a severe sentence on Mangione, 28, especially considering the federal stalking charges he faces, which could result in life imprisonment for each count.
“I hope he gets what he deserves,” Bruce shared with the media.
He also noted that there are still many legal proceedings ahead. “We’ll see what Dec. 18 brings. We wish him the best,” he added, though it seemed more like a formality given the situation.
Brian Thompson had taken up the role of Chief Executive Officer of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021.
During the court proceedings, the Thompson family was present, including the victim’s grieving wife, Paulette, who had learned of the plea agreement just days earlier. Bruce remarked that witnessing Mangione’s confession to the premeditated killing of the 50-year-old father of two, which stemmed from a grudge against the healthcare sector, was particularly emotional. “It was an overwhelming morning,” he reflected.
The family issued a statement on Friday, emphasizing that Mangione’s guilty plea represents a crucial step toward justice for Brian and the entire family.
“Although nothing can truly alleviate the suffering from his loss, we are thankful that the federal justice system has held accountable those behind this horrific act,” the statement read. They expressed anticipation for a sentence that truly reflects the severity of the crime. Furthermore, keeping in mind the ongoing legal matters in New York and Pennsylvania, they will persist in pursuing the justice that Brian deserves.
