Rural Health Fund Launched by Trump Administration

The Trump administration has officially started the implementation of a $50 billion initiative aimed at transforming health care in rural areas. The goal is to provide affordable and expanded access to health services across all states in the U.S.

On Monday, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) unveiled the Rural Health Transformation Program, which is part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Beginning next year, this program will allocate between $145 million and $281 million to each state.

“This unprecedented federal investment will help states expand access to care in rural communities, strengthen the rural health workforce, modernize rural facilities and technology, and support innovative models that bring high-quality, dependable care closer to home,” stated Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The announcement indicated that 50% of the funding will be evenly distributed among all states, while the remaining 50% will be allocated based on various criteria. These include metrics related to rurality, a state’s current or proposed health policies, and initiatives with the potential for significant impacts on rural health.

The program aims to enhance access in rural areas by creating new points of care and helping to maintain local health systems.

CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz mentioned during a briefing that the application review process had been thorough, centered on three key criteria.

Dr. Oz also pointed out that some funds depend on states fulfilling agreed-upon policy actions tied to the program.

“If the state commits to specific actions and fails to follow through, we have the option to retract the financial support that was promised,” Dr. Oz added.

“This historic investment empowers local health facilities and workers to manage healthcare in their communities. Thanks to President Trump, rural Americans will have affordable healthcare available nearby, free from red tape,” he said.

According to the distribution details, Texas will receive the largest allocation at $281,319,361, while New Jersey will get the smallest amount of $147,250,806.

The program is expected to begin at the start of the upcoming year.
