Over 40 million Americans depend on SNAP benefits for groceries, but recent government shutdowns have been a challenge for them. Blaze TV host Allie Beth Stuckey voiced her thoughts, suggesting perhaps it’s not entirely negative.
She pointed out that this money isn’t just a government gift; it comes from taxpayers who work hard every day.
A SNAP recipient, Erin Annis, shared her experience in a CBS interview, emphasizing the importance of these benefits for her independence. She mentioned, “What does it mean to you and your life to have those resources?”
“Everything. It means everything to me. I don’t know what else to do except rely on my family and I don’t want to do that right now. Maybe there will come a time when I have to live with one of my sons, but for now I want to be independent, I want to be alone,” Annis replied.
The interviewer asked, “Have these resources enabled you to become independent?” and Annis confirmed, “Yes, it has made me more independent.”
Stuckey countered with a reminder, saying, “People kind of forget where this money comes from. You’re not really independent. You’re completely dependent on the government. And it’s not dependent on the government. So the government doesn’t have its own money. The government gets money from us.”
She added, “And people who are willing to make sacrifices, people who are trying to make ends meet, are paying to buy the groceries for this woman so that she can live ‘independently.’”
Stuckey emphasized that taxes are mandatory, with serious repercussions for noncompliance, and articulated her view that it’s not ethical or moral to take from one to give to another in this way.
