Forensic Analysis Underway for Remains Found During Manhunt
A forensic examination is currently in progress to ascertain if the bones discovered this week amid an extensive manhunt belong to the 33-year-old father suspected of killing his three young daughters near a campsite in Washington last spring.
The bones were located near the Cascade Mountains Campground, where the body of a girl was previously found in early June. Authorities are looking into whether these remains are indeed human, as reported by a news outlet on Friday.
The suspected murderer’s body was found on June 2 at the Rock Island campground, situated in the rugged Wenatchee National Forest. The girls—Paicin, 9; Evelyn, 8; and Olivia, 5—were discovered on the same day.
This discovery came just days after the girls’ mother reported them missing, having entrusted them to their father for a scheduled custody visit.
Decker’s abandoned pickup truck was also discovered near an area described as “sturdy, forested terrain” by the police.
Authorities are pursuing three counts of first-degree murder against Decker in connection with his daughters’ deaths.
The gruesome nature of this case has garnered national media attention. Reports indicate the girls were found with zip ties and plastic bags over their heads near a campsite close to Leavenworth, about 150 miles east of Seattle.
Medical examiners have classified the girls’ deaths as homicides resulting from strangulation.
For three months, police have been searching for Decker, describing him as an Army veteran with significant outdoor survival skills, often going off the grid for extended periods.
The FBI’s Seattle office shared a detailed account of the search efforts from this week.
More than 100 personnel were deployed over two days to comb through challenging outdoor conditions, with temperatures nearing 100 degrees. Despite the dense vegetation and difficult terrain, officials managed to cover and document over 1 million square meters (approximately 247 acres), supported by FBI headquarters and various partner agencies.
Chelan County Sheriff Michael L. Morrison is also seeking Decker and has participated in the recent search efforts.
As of now, authorities remain uncertain about the father’s whereabouts.
“At this point, we haven’t found any definitive evidence indicating whether Travis Decker is alive or deceased,” the sheriff stated. “We’re continuing to follow all credible leads.”
