Archaeologists recently discovered an early medieval church in Venice’s iconic Piazza San Marco.
The Venice Lagoon Municipality’s ABAP Supervisory Board shared a Facebook post about the discovery last month.
The Italian organization explained that archaeologists discovered that “parts of the brickwork and floor level are attributed to the ancient church of San Gemignano.”

”[It] “It stood here during the High Middle Ages, but over time lost its memory of its exact location within the Martian region,” reads a translated version of the post.

Human remains were also buried within the church grounds, and archaeologists believe there are at least four bodies buried there. Photos released by the group show skeletons buried in muddy brickwork.
“In ancient times, it was very common to be buried next to or within a chapel, and it was equally common to have many dead placed in the same tomb, not necessarily at the same time.” It is written in the book post.

According to Italian media outlet RaiNews, the tomb dates back to the 7th or 8th century. The church itself was built in his 6th century.
In the 12th century, the building was destroyed and the church moved to another part of the square. The building was then destroyed in his 16th century and replaced by another church, but then demolished in 1807.

The dig was praised by enthusiasts in the comments section of the Facebook post.
