Jets and Bills: A Historical Rivalry
Orchard Park — The Jets faced off against the Bills for the first time on September 30, 1973, at Rich Stadium. Unfortunately for the Jets, they lost that encounter 9-7, with Al Woodall connecting on a 34-yard touchdown pass to Jerome Barkham, marking their only score of the game.
Fast forward to now, and the Jets have played at this venue 49 times, recording a 20-29 overall record. They’ll hit the 50-game mark this Sunday at what is currently known as Highmark Stadium. Unless, of course, something unexpected occurs with the Bills hosting a playoff game, this will likely be their last outing at this stadium.
For the Jets, this game holds little meaning; they’re sitting at a disappointing 3-13. On the other hand, the Bills have playoff seeds 5, 6, or 7 in contention depending on the results of this game and others. However, they’re resting star quarterback Josh Allen due to a foot injury, which seems prudent with a playoff spot already secured.
Even though this particular matchup might seem lackluster, it’s worth reflecting on some memorable Jets games played at this stadium over the years.
September 10, 1978: Jets 21, Bills 20
This game might not ring a bell for many, but Richard Todd managed to throw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Barkham with just 59 seconds on the clock, completing his third touchdown of the game.
December 6, 1992: Jets 24, Bills 17
The Jets surprised the heavily favored Bills, who were 17-point favorites, just a week after teammate Dennis Byrd was paralyzed. With 1:41 left, the Jets seized the lead when Brian Washington intercepted Jim Kelly, returning it 23 yards for a touchdown. This marked the first Jets victory over the Bills since 1987.

This game showcased the Jets dominating the four-time AFC champions. It was also Pete Carroll’s debut as Jets head coach and the NFL’s first appearance of cornerback Aaron Glenn.
December 19, 1998: Jets 17, Bills 10
In a closely contested match, Dedrick Ward caught a 71-yard touchdown pass from Vinny Testaverde, leading the Jets to victory in the AFC East.
