Family of Renee Good Hires Attorney Following ICE Shooting
The family of Renee Good, a woman killed by ICE agents during an immigration raid in Minneapolis, has engaged the same law firm that represented George Floyd’s family. The Chicago-based firm, Romanucci & Blandin, announced on Wednesday that it will support Good’s parents, siblings, and widow. In 2021, they achieved a $27 million settlement for Floyd’s family after his death at the hands of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.
Good, 37, was shot on January 7 by ICE agent Jonathan Ross in south Minneapolis. Reports indicate that Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem claimed Good had been “stalking and interfering with ICE” before the incident. She suggested that Good attempted to “weaponize the car” against the officer, which Noem described as self-defense and labeled Good’s actions as “domestic terrorism.”
The family contests this narrative. In a statement through their attorney, they described Good as “a beautiful light in our family” and expressed a desire for her legacy to be one of peace rather than political contention.
A spokesperson for the firm indicated that they plan to file a lawsuit against ICE and the federal government. Romanucci mentioned that pursuing legal action against state and local law enforcement can be challenging due to various legal protections, noting that cases against the federal government present an even greater complexity.
The FBI has also launched an investigation into the shooting, and six federal prosecutors in Minnesota have resigned amid reports of a Justice Department inquiry into Good’s widow. Notably, Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson, who led a significant fraud investigation, was among those who left their positions.
After the FBI took control of the investigation, Minnesota authorities began a separate inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
