Renee Nicole Good's family engages George Floyd's legal team following deadly ICE shooting

The family of Renee Nicole Good, who was shot and killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis last week, has hired the same law firm that represented George Floyd’s family for a new civil investigation announced on Wednesday. The Chicago-based Romanucci & Brandin law firm confirmed its representation of Good’s family.

Antonio M. Romanucci, a founding partner of the firm, is representing Good’s partner, Becca, her parents, Tim and Donna Ganger, along with her siblings. Romanucci expressed that many people, both in Minneapolis and nationwide, are troubled by the events surrounding Renee’s death on January 7, 2026, and are eager to understand how such a tragedy could occur after she had just dropped her children off at school.

The firm, known for its work after Floyd’s death in 2020, facilitated a massive $27 million settlement, one of the largest pretrial settlements in U.S. history for a civil rights wrongful death case.

Additionally, the firm is representing the family of Sonya Massey, who was killed by a police officer in her Springfield, Illinois home in 2024, culminating in a $10 million settlement with the local sheriff’s department.

Minneapolis attorney Kevin Riach is joining the case as co-counsel. Romanucci highlighted their dedication to ensuring transparency and accountability in policing, aiming to be a strong voice for Good’s family.

Renee Good’s situation stems from a law enforcement action where the Department of Homeland Security claims she was shot while officers attempted to arrest her under accusations of threatening them with her vehicle. Romanucci remarked that, due to the nature of the case, pursuing a civil lawsuit involves a more intricate process outlined by the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA), which complicates legitimate actions against the federal government.

While lawsuits are typically tried before a federal judge instead of a jury, Romanucci emphasized their commitment to handling the case carefully. Tim and Donna Ganger described their daughter as a “beautiful light” and reminisced about her with deep affection, noting how she was their emotional anchor and a source of joy. They expressed a poignant sense of loss, emphasizing her nurturing spirit and loving nature.

The Department of Homeland Security has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the case.
