Rep. Elise Stefanik Celebrates Columbia President Stepping Down

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) welcomed the news that Columbia University President Minouche Shafik would be stepping down, months after violent anti-Israel protests erupted on campus.

In an open letter published on Wednesday, Shafik said the time since the protests had “taken a considerable toll” on her.

“This period has taken a huge toll on my family, as well as others in our community,” Shafik said. said“After much reflection over the summer, I have decided that my stepping down at this time would best prepare Columbia University to navigate the challenges ahead.”

“I have striven to uphold academic principles and to tread a path that treats all people fairly and with compassion. It has been painful for the community, for me as chancellor and personally to see myself, my colleagues and students being subject to threats and abuse,” Shafik added.

In response, Elise Stefanick said Shafik’s resignation could not have come sooner.

“Three gone, many more remaining. As I have said consistently since her disastrous testimony at the Education and Labor Committee hearings, Columbia University President Minouche Shafik’s failed presidency is unsustainable and it was only a matter of time before she was forced to resign,” she said in a statement shared with Breitbart News.

“After failing to protect Jewish students and negotiate with pro-Hamas terrorists, this forced resignation is long overdue. We will continue to demand moral transparency, condemnation of anti-Semitism, protections for Jewish students and faculty, and stronger leadership from America’s institutions of higher education,” she added.

As Breitbart News reported in May, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) responded to an encampment of anti-Israel protesters who had occupied a Columbia University building and were demanding that the school provide meals.

Shortly after the attack, Jewish students wrote an open letter saying they felt unsafe on campus and were defending their Jewish identity.

“Most of us did not choose to become political activists. We do not bang drums or chant catchy slogans. We are average students, just like you, trying to get through our final exams. It was those who demonized us under the mask of anti-Zionism who forced us to become activists and to publicly defend our Jewish identity,” the letter read. He said.
