Stefanik Criticizes New York Democrats Amid Budget Talks
ALBANY – Representative Elise Stefanik recently criticized Democratic leaders during her visit to the Capitol, as state lawmakers work to finalize a spending budget.
“This year reflects yet another failed, radical, and reckless agenda in New York,” Stefanik stated at a press conference. She was flanked by state Republican minority leaders Rob Ortt and Will Barclay.
She accused the Democrats of prioritizing a “massive, bloated, $254 billion budget” that, in her view, is detrimental to workers, families, farmers, small businesses, manufacturers, and law enforcement. “They’ve put New York last,” she added.
Stefanik, a prominent House Republican from New York and an ally of former President Trump, expressed her concerns over various Democratic initiatives. These included easing the criteria for releasing violent offenders from prisons and reducing standards for natural gas infrastructure deployment.
Looking ahead to the 2026 gubernatorial race against Governor Kathy Hochul, Stefanik seems to be gaining traction following an impactful speech in Staten Island last week with North Country lawmakers.
On the same day, state Democrats held a press conference to respond to Stefanik’s criticisms, openly attacking federal Republican lawmakers and Trump’s expansive spending agendas. Congress President Carl Heastie described the budget bill as “ugly, devastating, and painful,” projecting Medicaid cuts could reach $800 billion over two years.
Democrats have emphasized the budget’s potential impact on hospitals and Medicaid funds, framing federal proposals as an attack on states like New York. “These so-called beautiful bills are not just flawed policies; they’re a direct hit on middle-class families,” stated Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins.
However, Heastie and Stewart-Cousins urged Republicans to go further in abolishing the cap on state and local tax deductions, which they believe should not stop at an increase from $10,000 to $30,000.
Stefanik, meanwhile, criticized the federal government from New York Republicans for failing to approach tax cuts for residents. “I doubt they even considered suggestions for lowering taxes. They seem focused on blaming SALT,” she remarked.
Ortt expressed frustration towards Democrats, calling them “hypocrites.” He urged voters not to let them off the hook, stating, “I’m not going to, and Barclay won’t either.”
A spokesperson for Governor Hochul chose not to comment but addressed Stefanik’s statements in a statement from the State Democrats, claiming, “Stefanik deceives her constituents about Trump’s Medicaid plans, but New Yorkers are seeing through it. They believe Governor Hochul’s budget will ultimately put money back in their pockets, reduce middle-class taxes, and enhance street and subway safety.”
