Phishing Attempt Targeting Congressman Fine Linked to Iranian State Actors
Rep. Randy Fine, a Republican from Florida, recently revealed that he was the target of a phishing attack allegedly orchestrated by an Iranian state actor. This scam presented itself as a request for a television interview, seemingly aimed at gaining access to his personal email account.
“Someone very skilled crafted what looked like a request from Newsmax to try and set up an interview with me,” Fine explained during an interview, describing how his staff initially attempted to handle the email before spotting that “the link wasn’t working.” He believes the phishing attempt was meant to breach his personal Google account.
Fine’s revelation comes in the wake of rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran. Following President Donald Trump’s order for an attack on Iran in February, Fine noted that the phishing attempt occurred just a day after combat operations began, which he viewed as suspicious timing.
“We don’t think this is a coincidence,” Fine stated, adding that this incident aligns with U.S. intelligence concerns regarding potential cyber and physical threats stemming from the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, especially toward notable politicians.
In early March, the FBI reported that a hacker group with ties to Iran, named the Handara Hack Team, had compromised the personal email of Director Kash Patel. The FBI informed that the leaked information was significant but not government-related, adding that they had enacted all the necessary precautions for potential threats.
After being alerted by Capitol Police about the attack targeting him, Fine indicated this was likely the work of Iranian state actors. He vivid details of the phishing email revealed it was spelled as “news-max.org.” Communications reviewed indicated the U.S. Capitol Police suspected that the outreach to Fine’s office originated from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, prompting them to request further collaboration with the FBI Cyber Task Force for an investigation.
“They have been persistently reaching out to us,” Fine remarked, noting he had informed the FBI about the incident, with agents indicating familiarity with similar Iranian actors. While the FBI chose not to comment on the situation, a source disclosed that they managed to reach Fine at the time of the phishing attack and have begun probing the matter.
Fine expressed feeling particularly targeted, citing a rise in verbal threats against him. He noted an incident where an imposter approached his home and emphasized, “It’s clear that I was targeted. This wasn’t random.” He mentioned being “the most visible Jewish Republican politician in the United States.” This, he believes, could be a factor in being targeted.
He shared his concerns that the attackers might gather personal information, although he thinks the limited use of his Google account may reduce their success. “The worst-case scenario is they could track my location,” he stated, adding that the situation has been “very stressful” for his family.
Known for his strong pro-Israel views, Fine has been vocal about advocating for significant military actions against enemies of the U.S. He has praised Trump’s collaborative strike on Iran, describing it as a necessary measure to protect Western civilization.
Fine concluded with a strong call to action, emphasizing the need to confront and eliminate the threat of terrorism and to protect not just Israeli citizens but also Americans and Christians living in the region.
