Rep. Gill Critiques Abortion Methods During Capitol Hearing
Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) had a notably intense exchange with abortion advocates during a recent hearing at the Capitol, particularly targeting their “favorite method” of abortion.
During this session, Gill questioned Democratic witness Jessica Waters about her views on various abortion procedures, which seemed to visibly unsettle her. Waters, who is recognized as an authority on reproductive rights law and works at American University Washington School of Law, initially deflected the question, stating she supports access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare.
However, Gill persisted, asking if there was a particular method she favored. He proceeded to read detailed descriptions of several abortion methods, challenging her to share her thoughts on them.
“The first type is called ‘suction abortion,'” he stated. “When the cervix dilates, a suction device, significantly more powerful than household vacuums, is used to tear apart the baby’s body and remove it through a hose.” He followed this up with, “Is it better that way?”
Waters avoided answering directly, maintaining that she wanted to focus on discussing the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act instead. This law addresses the use of force or threats against individuals seeking reproductive health services.
“That sounds pretty gross,” Gill continued. “Do you agree?” At this point, Waters appeared increasingly uncomfortable, attempting to redirect the conversation.
Gill then brought up another method, “dilation and curettage.” He described the procedure, in which a looped knife is used after dilating the cervix to cut the baby into smaller pieces. Again, he asked, “Is it better that way?”
Despite his repeated efforts, Waters remained reticent, insisting on discussing the FACE Act instead. Gill pressed her, saying, “You’re pro-abortion. I’m asking if you prefer dilation and curettage.” When she attempted to shift the focus again, he responded, “Why not talk about abortion directly?”
Gill suggested this topic might be uncomfortable to address. “How about ‘dilatation and evacuation’? Forceps grab the baby and twist it apart. If the head is too large, it can be crushed—better this way?” He pressed further, stating, “That’s unpleasant to hear, isn’t it? It’s barbaric and evil.” Waters seemed visibly upset.
He also described a method called “saline injection,” explaining how a saline solution is injected into the baby’s amniotic fluid, which leads to severe suffering for the fetus. Again, he posed the question, “Is it better that way?” This time, Waters did not respond directly.
“If I were you, I wouldn’t want to discuss this—it’s barbaric and evil,” he stated.
The hearing highlighted concerns raised by a recent Justice Department report, which alleged that the Biden administration collaborated with pro-abortion groups to utilize the FACE Act in an effort to penalize pro-life advocates.
