Florida Congressman Proposes Bill to Eliminate H-1B Visa Program
Congressman Greg Steube, a Republican from Florida, has put forward a bill intended to abolish the controversial H-1B visa program that allows companies to hire foreign workers.
In a recent press release, Steube expressed his concerns, stating, “Prioritizing foreign workers over the well-being and prosperity of Americans undermines our values and our national interests.” He elaborated on how the program displaces American workers, arguing that it mostly benefits corporations and foreign competitors while disadvantaging U.S. citizens.
He emphasized, “We can’t shield our children’s American Dream while taking away from them to benefit noncitizens. This is why we are introducing legislation to prioritize working Americans again.” The proposed bill is referred to as the “EXILE Act,” which stands for “Repealing the Exploitative Imported Worker Exemption Act.”
Back in September, President Donald Trump announced a proclamation imposing a $100,000 fee for H-1B visa petitions.
In regard to this new regulation, the President stated, “The Secretary of State shall confirm receipt of payment during the H-1B visa application process and shall approve only those applications for which the employer has made the required payment.” This declaration has raised eyebrows and ignited discussions about the implications for the future of the H-1B program.
Steube continues to voice strong opposition, suggesting that the H-1B system is detrimental to American workers. He stated, “For too long, American workers have been preyed upon by a corrupt H-1B visa program. Companies have used this system to boost profits through imported cheaper labor, suppressing wages and sidelining millions of Americans from lucrative job opportunities.”
