Republican Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (Pennsylvania) has introduced a bill that would designate Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia as the “Donald J. Trump International Airport.”
Located 42 miles west of Washington, D.C., the airport is currently named for John Foster Dulles, who served as U.S. Secretary of State in the Eisenhower administration from 1953 to 1959.
John Foster Dulles was a key figure in the early Cold War era and opposed communism. He was also reportedly involved in the 1953 Iranian coup and overthrow of the Guatemalan government. His younger brother, Alan Welsh Dulles, served as director of the CIA from 1953 until 1961.
The Dulles opened in 1962 and was dedicated by President John F. Kennedy with former President Dwight D. Eisenhower in attendance. The airport’s main terminal is a regional landmark designed by Eero Saarinen, who also designed the Gateway Arch in St. Louis.
Dulles boast According to the Department of Transpiration in 2016, it is the busiest airport in the Mid-Atlantic region outside of the New York metropolitan area.
Reschenthaler House bill names airport after 45th president mention It was submitted to the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on Friday. Reschenthaler, who volunteered for duty in Iraq and is currently serving his third term in Congress, is seeking a co-sponsor for the bill.
With Republicans holding a slim majority in the House heading into November’s election, it seems unlikely that the airport’s name will be changed. However, the name change could be successful if Republicans win the presidency, the Senate, and keep the House of Representatives.
