Representative Ilhan Omar stated that one of her guests at the recent State of the Union address was arrested and “forcibly removed” from the House gallery, criticizing the Capitol Police for their “heavy-handed” tactics.
Omar (D-Minn.) alleged that Aliya Rahman, a software engineer who previously required medical assistance during anti-immigrant protests in Minnesota, was taken out of the gallery for standing “silently” while Trump spoke.
“Aliya stood quietly in the gallery during the President’s speech, in a section where others were also standing,” Omar remarked in a statement. Despite informing officers of her shoulder injury, she was forcibly ejected and charged with “unlawful conduct.”
According to the “Squad” member, “She was treated aggressively until someone intervened to ensure she received medical attention.”
Capitol Police have reportedly confirmed that Rahman was arrested on suspicion of misconduct. However, Omar criticized the police’s response, calling it “heavy-handed.”
“The overzealous reaction to peaceful guests sends a chilling message about our democracy’s state,” she expressed.
Rahman faces a misdemeanor charge that could result in up to six months in prison and a fine of $500. She claims a sergeant explained her removal was due to her standing up.
“The only actions allowed during the State of the Union are to sit or stand,” she noted. “I stood up and was arrested.”
Rahman mentioned that even though she remained quiet and wasn’t displaying any controversial symbols, she was still arrested, claiming to be “much quieter” than some Republicans nearby.
She described being arrested despite informing the police about her shoulder injury, stating that she had to be pulled away so forcefully that two bystanders tried to help. “It was only when the sergeant stepped in and insisted, ‘We need to provide her with medical care and a wheelchair,’ that they stopped,” she recounted.
In addition to Rahman, Omar had also invited several other guests, including local leaders and younger activists.
Rahman’s removal from the event follows a previous incident where she faced accusations related to obstructing immigration enforcement in the aftermath of a tragic shooting.
The situation has drawn significant attention, especially with the large police presence in Minneapolis as part of a major immigration operation that has faced criticism from activists.
