Rep. Mikie Sherrill Critiques Charlie Kirk After House Resolution
Rep. Mikie Sherrill from New Jersey has expressed strong criticism towards Charlie Kirk, describing him as a Christian nationalist who seeks to diminish the rights of women and Black individuals. This remark came in the context of a House resolution that was passed to honor Kirk’s contributions after he was killed during a speaking event at a Utah university.
The resolution received significant bipartisan support, approved by a vote of 310-58. Both sides denounced the political violence following Kirk’s assassination. Still, the vote highlighted divisions among Democrats; 95 supported the resolution, while 58 opposed it and 22 abstained.
Sherrill accused Kirk of being associated with a form of “domestic terrorism,” which is particularly concerning in light of the ongoing issues of political violence in the country.
In a statement, she emphasized the seriousness of her commitments to freedom of speech. Sherrill noted that while she defends the constitutional protections for all, including those she fundamentally disagrees with, she pointed out that Kirk has actively opposed rights for marginalized groups. “Charlie Kirk not only advocated for a Christian nationalist agenda but also supported the rollback of rights for women and people of color,” she stated.
In her remarks, Sherrill also took issue with former President Donald Trump, accusing him of hypocrisy. While he condemned Kirk’s murder, she said he simultaneously spurred a political atmosphere reminiscent of historical witch hunts, stifling dissent against Kirk’s views which she characterized as racist and anti-American.
Sherrill’s stance has not been without backlash. Critics, particularly from Republican circles, point to her connection with socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani in the upcoming New York City mayoral race. Courtney Alexander, the communications director for the Republican Governors Association, condemned Sherrill’s position, arguing that her alignment with Mamdani’s agenda poses a threat to New Jersey.
Through all these developments, Sherrill remains adamant about her viewpoints and the importance of addressing the root causes of political violence and discrimination in the current political landscape.
