Rep. Sheila Cherfilus McCormick’s Holiday Message Raises Eyebrows

Rep. Sheila Cherfilus McCormick, a Democrat from Florida, may not come off as innocuous in her recent Christmas message.

Accompanying her official portrait is a caption that reads, “From my family to all of you, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe holiday season.”

Interestingly, the portrait seems to have been digitally altered, as a commenter pointed out, removing a yellow diamond ring from her finger.

In November, Cherfilus McCormick was indicted for allegedly stealing $5 million in FEMA funds. The indictment states that she spent $109,000 of those federal disaster relief funds on a “fancy vivid yellow diamond” ring. This description notably matches the ring shown in her official portrait.

Cherfilus McCormick claims the fraud charges are “unfair, baseless and spurious.” In her statement, she said, “The timing alone is strange and clearly intended to distract from far more pressing national issues. I have fully cooperated with all legal requests since day one and will continue to do so until this matter is resolved.”

Attorney General Pamela Bondi commented on the situation, stating, “Using disaster relief funds to enrich oneself is a particularly selfish and cynical crime. No one is above the law, including those in power who rob taxpayers for personal gain. We will follow the facts of this case and deliver justice.”

If found guilty, Cherfilus McCormick could face up to 53 years in prison, according to a Department of Justice press release.

And if she is innocent, well, perhaps she could use some new social media guidance. Many are familiar with the Streisand effect: attempting to conceal something—especially if done awkwardly—often leads to increased curiosity.
