Florida Rep. Sheila Chaffelas McCormick Resigns Following Ethics Violations
Florida Democratic Representative Sheila Chaffelas McCormick announced her resignation on Tuesday after being convicted of multiple ethics violations associated with campaign finance laws.
McCormick shared her resignation letter to Company X shortly before stepping down. According to the House Ethics Committee, she was found guilty on March 27 for breaking 25 House Ethics Rules, specifically for misappropriating COVID-19 emergency funds for her campaign.
In November 2025, a grand jury indicted her on charges related to embezzling millions from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds designated for disaster relief.
In her resignation letter, McCormick claimed, “This was not a fair process. The Ethics Committee denied my new attorney’s reasonable request for time to prepare a defense… I simply cannot stand by and let my due process rights be trampled upon and my reputation besmirched.”
Democratic colleagues insinuated that her situation and the investigation were driven by “political gamesmanship,” which they discussed as part of the reason for her resignation. McCormick also asserted she would “not punish people until due process has been completed,” hinting at the dangers of rushing to judgment.
Her troubles began in September 2025 when complaints regarding campaign finance violations surfaced. Allegations included unreported donations from various campaign associates, including political consultant Mark Goodrich and family members of congressmen.
McCormick’s family was tied to Progressive People, Inc., which funneled funds to Truth and Justice, Inc. (TJI), a tax-exempt organization in South Florida. Reports indicated that Goodrich had access to campaign funds, utilizing them for vendor payments. Notably, TJI made wire transfers totaling $150,000 to printing and mailing companies linked to the campaign.
Furthermore, she faced threats of expulsion, notably from Republican Florida Rep. Greg Steube, who proposed a resolution shortly after the allegations emerged.
McCormick’s resignation marks the third high-profile departure from Congress in April, following California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell and Texas Republican Rep. Tony Gonzalez, both entangled in sexual misconduct allegations.
This is breaking news and will be updated.
