New Jersey Governor Candidate Sidesteps New York Mayor Race
New Jersey’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate has once again declined to endorse the party’s nominee for mayor in neighboring New York City.
“I’m not involved in that race because my focus is entirely on New Jersey. The people of New York need to decide that election,” Sheryl stated during the Governor Candidate Forum.
Her comments come as President Trump and Republicans aim to court vulnerable Democrats this election year, viewing Zoran Mamdani unfavorably.
At a recent forum hosted by PIX11 News, Sheryl mentioned that New Jersey voters aren’t inquiring about the New York mayoral race.
Garden State Showdown: Democrats and Republicans Clash on Key Issues
“Folks in New Jersey are constantly bringing up issues like affordability,” she explained. “They share their concerns about healthcare, costs, electricity, housing prices, and even the funding freeze for the gateway tunnel.” She underscored this point amid the backdrop of the federal government shutdown, which has caused delays in funding for a significant project aimed at building a new rail tunnel between New Jersey and New York City.
When asked about the New York City mayoral race on two occasions during the forum, she reiterated, “I need to emphasize that I’m concentrating on races in New Jersey. It’s really a New York issue. I don’t even have voter registration there.”
Federal Government Shutdowns Impact Critical Gubernatorial Race
Sheryl’s remarks echoed earlier statements regarding Mamdani. Meanwhile, Republicans are capitalizing on the opportunity in the 2025 election cycle, particularly given the term-limited Democratic Governor Phil Murphy’s waning popularity.
During the summer, GOP candidate Jack Ciattarelli made headlines, voicing concerns that Sheryl isn’t sufficiently engaged in the New York race. He suggested that he viewed Mamdani as a Democratic candidate with potential electoral vulnerabilities.
Mamdani, who was born in Uganda, stands out as possibly the first Muslim mayor of New York City if elected. He could also become the youngest mayor in the city’s history, showing strong polling numbers against former Governor Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

While several influential Democrats and the Democratic National Committee back Mamdani, some remain hesitant to offer their support. Recently, New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her endorsement, whereas top Congressional figures like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Leader Hakeem Jeffries have yet to commit.
Backed by a passionate grassroots campaign, Mamdani has gained traction by addressing issues like the high cost of living and affordability in New York City. His support base includes notable progressive leaders such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Mamdani has effectively utilized social media, proposing initiatives like eliminating bus fares, implementing tuition-free municipal housing for CUNY students, providing free childcare for young children, and even establishing a government-run grocery store.
However, he has faced criticism from both sides of the aisle regarding his leftist policies, comments about Israel, and past critiques of the New York City Police Department, along with proposals to shift some responsibilities from the NYPD to social services and community initiatives.
