Elise Stefanik Announces Gubernatorial Run in New York
Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik from New York has officially declared her candidacy for the upcoming gubernatorial race, challenging the sitting Democratic governor, Kathy Hochul.
Launching her campaign on a Friday, Stefanik highlighted the issue of rising costs in New York, asserting that “Republicans, Democrats, and independents will unite to remove Kathy Hochul from office.” She framed her mission as a necessary step to revive New York’s economy.
“I’m running for governor to ensure New York becomes affordable and safe,” she stated in an interview. “For too long, we’ve been under one-party rule from the Democrats, and frankly, Kathy Hochul has proven to be the worst governor in the nation. New York faces severe financial challenges, with the highest taxes and utility costs. On top of that, we’re grappling with a crime crisis due to Hochul’s underwhelming reform efforts on bail and support for defunding the police,” she added.
Stefanik was particularly critical of Hochul’s endorsement of Zoran Mamdani, the incoming mayor of New York City, whom she described as a “virulently anti-Semitic, pro-Hamas communist.” This characterization followed a week marked by intense discussions regarding Mamdani’s political stance.
“After witnessing an unabashed anti-Semite who supports raising taxes despite winning only a slim majority, it’s clear Hochul has compromised her values,” Stefanik remarked. “When the public sought strong leadership, Hochul seemed to back down. It’s evident she is losing support among even her own party,” Stefanik continued.
“Hochul has let down New Yorkers, and people from all political backgrounds recognize that we’ve had enough. It’s time for practical leadership to restore affordability and safety to New York,” she concluded.
In a tweet, Stefanik reiterated her criticism of Hochul, emphasizing the state’s troubled economic standing and rising living costs under her tenure.
In response, Sarafina Chitika, Hochul’s communications director, labeled Stefanik as “Sellout Stefanik” and accused her of being a champion for Donald Trump in Congress while undermining healthcare and education funding in New York.
“Clearly, misleading New Yorkers in Congress wasn’t sufficient for her. Now, she desires to bring Trump’s chaos and increased expenses to our state. While she prioritizes Trump, Governor Hochul is focused on reducing costs and advocating for New Yorkers whom Stefanik has disregarded,” Chitika stated.
Recent polling from the Manhattan Institute indicates a close contest, with Stefanik holding a slight edge: 43% of voters support her, while 42% back Hochul. A small portion remains undecided or favors alternative candidates.
