Rep. Tom Suozzi’s Views on Socialist Candidates
Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) suggested that socialist candidates like Zohran Mamdani, running in New York City, might consider forming their own party.
During an interview on Sunday with CBS New York’s Marcia Kramer, Suozzi was questioned about whether minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) should back Mamdani. He expressed concerns that supporting Mamdani could jeopardize the Democrats’ chances in the 2026 elections. Suozzi praised capitalism, commenting that it has opened doors for many, while asserting that “American socialism has failed.”
Kramer asked, “What about Zoran Mamdani? Should he support him?”
Suozzi responded, saying he hadn’t recently discussed this with Jeffries. “Honestly, I don’t think he should support Zoran Mamdani,” he stated. “It’s not good for Democrats overall.”
Suozzi highlighted that “capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than any other system worldwide,” while reiterating his view that socialism hasn’t succeeded in the U.S.
He further emphasized his belief in free enterprise and democracy, acknowledging the pressing issue of affordability in housing. “Yes, there’s a significant affordability problem,” he noted, suggesting a need to support police and reduce costs.
In a separate 2021 video, Mamdani, who won the Democratic primary for NYC mayor this July, had commented on tackling the housing crisis, advocating for a commitment to social housing. He mentioned the possibility of purchasing homes in the private sector for community ownership.
Mamdani also faced criticism for proposing a city-run grocery store and for previous remarks regarding police responses to domestic violence calls.
Other Democrats, such as New York Mayor Eric Adams (D), are navigating their paths independently in the NYC mayoral race.
