Walz Faces Backlash Over Fraud Enforcement Claims
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is under fire after allegedly taking credit for a federal fraud investigation. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) criticized Walz for his statements, particularly regarding a recent raid in Minneapolis related to fraud cases.
Emmer, whose district covers parts of north and west Minneapolis, pointedly noted that the investigation was executed by federal agencies, tweeting, “More criticism from the governor. @FBIDirectorKash just confirmed that @FBI, @TheJusticeDept and @DHSgov drafted and executed today’s search warrant.” He went on to assert that Walz’s only claim to fame should be the staggering $9 billion in taxpayer funds lost under his administration.
The Department of Justice and Homeland Security conducted raids on 22 suspected fraudulent businesses as part of a broader investigation into a significant scheme involving child care, Medicaid, and members of Minnesota’s Somali immigrant community.
Walz, previously a vocal critic of the Trump administration’s fraud enforcement, defended his position in a post on X after the raids. He stated that the actions taken were a result of state agencies spotting unusual activity. “If you commit fraud in Minnesota, you will get caught,” he emphasized, pointing out the importance of collaboration between state and federal agencies.
His comments did not sit well with Emmer, who described Walz’s behavior as absurd. “For Tim Walz to take credit for investigating fraud is as ridiculous as for an arsonist to take credit for putting out a house fire,” he remarked. Emmer raised concerns that Walz not only facilitated a system prone to fraud but may have been aware of the issues longer than he suggested.
The Justice Department also expressed discontent with Walz’s assertion, stating via their rapid response account, “You’re suing, not sharing,” and requested more details for the ongoing investigation. The tensions continue as Emmer further suggested that Walz should proactively share information about things like SNAP registration and voter rolls to ensure the integrity of government programs.
