Murder Charges Filed Against Repeat Offenders in Houston

Two individuals, a man and a woman, have been charged with murdering a 72-year-old woman in Houston this past week. Notably, the male suspect had missed a court appearance just days prior to the shooting and was out on bond at the time.

Tafana Thomas, 38, and Richard Mouton, 34, face murder charges following the incident that occurred shortly before 2 a.m. on Monday in the 4000 block of Lockwood Drive, according to police.

Responding to reports of gunfire, officers found three individuals with gunshot wounds, but sadly, emergency personnel pronounced them dead at the scene.

Both Thomas and Mouton were hospitalized, and surveillance footage allegedly captured their involvement in the shooting.

Witnesses informed authorities that Thomas was upset with the victim, identified as Linda Martinez, because she had previously refused to post bail for him. Sources indicated that the two had been arguing about this issue frequently.

It’s worth mentioning that Thomas had a prior connection to the residence where the crime occurred and that the suspects entered through an unlocked back door.

As per reports, when the masked suspects entered the room, they found Martinez asleep on the couch and threatened her for her jewelry while wielding an AR-style rifle.

Interestingly, Martinez fought back, using a revolver to shoot Mouton in the face and Thomas in the lower back, according to law enforcement.

Court documents revealed the extensive criminal history of both suspects. Thomas was out on bail related to a misdemeanor threat charge but allegedly made comments to the victim about repercussions following her firing from a job in 2022.

Mouton, a convicted felon, was reportedly under parole until 2024. His record includes recent arrests for drug possession and evading police, with multiple substances found at the time, according to court records.

Following his July arrest, Mouton was released, but he failed to appear in court last week, which led to a warrant being issued. He missed court on January 22, and the fatal incident happened just a few days later.

This situation raises significant concerns about the effectiveness of the parole system, particularly for those with felony convictions. One crime prevention advocate expressed discomfort over the lack of action taken against individuals like Mouton who are still on parole.
