Weather Update: Snow and Ice Expected in New England

A fast-moving clipper system is on its way to the New England area, anticipated to start impacting the region on Monday. This weather system is set to bring more snow to parts of the northern U.S., which has already seen a fair amount of winter weather this season.

Light snow began to fall across the Northeast on Monday, leading to several inches accumulating in parts of New England. Notably, New York City also reported a few inches of this light snow.

During the winter so far, the Northeast has certainly had its share of winter conditions. For instance, communities just outside of New York City, such as Mamaroneck, experienced a bit of snowfall.

On Sunday, Buffalo, New York, received nearly 5 inches of snow, coinciding with the conclusion of the regular season at Highmark Stadium.

Looking ahead, another storm system is predicted to arrive from the upper levels on Tuesday, which raises some concerns about icing and black ice due to freezing rain. This could create hazardous road conditions for drivers.

The National Weather Service (NWS) defines icing as the build-up of ice from the freezing of liquids upon contact with surfaces.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for certain areas in Minnesota until noon on Tuesday. Forecasters will turn their focus to the upper Midwest early in the day, as a developing system may cause temperatures to rise enough for a winter mix.

Areas of concern for widespread icing include Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, even though the anticipated accumulation of ice seems low. Still, cities like Detroit, Minneapolis, and Green Bay may face challenges.

As the week wraps up on Wednesday, another system is expected to enter New England, likely bringing more mixed precipitation. Snow is expected in higher elevations, while there is a chance for ice near the coast and some rain further south.

Throughout the week, a combination of snow and ice remains the main concern for the northern United States, with areas needing to be closely monitored as midweek approaches.
