Allegations of Food Contamination in North Carolina
In a troubling incident in North Carolina, a 66-year-old man, James Edwin Yokely Jr., faces serious accusations of contaminating ice cream with pills intended for his granddaughters. Recently charged with felony child abuse and food contamination, he allegedly reported that his granddaughters had discovered a hard object in ice cream from Dairy Queen.
On August 8, Yokely Jr. highlighted the issue to police at a Sheetz gas station. Medical personnel examined the girls and determined they hadn’t ingested any harmful substances, although tests on the tablets revealed they were illegal drugs. The police investigation, aided by security footage, suggested that Yokely Jr. had deliberately spiked the ice cream.
The results indicated the presence of cocaine and MDMA in the tablets. The Wilmington Police Department detailed the findings in a press release, which sparked widespread concern.
Notably, Yokely Jr. served as the chair of the Surry County Election Commission but decided to resign following these allegations. In his resignation letter, he stated, “This decision has not been made lightly… I believe this is the best course for the state election and the Surry County Election Commission.” He expressed confidence that he would clear his name as the truth unfolds.
In response, the State Election Commission mentioned that they would promptly appoint a new chairman for Surry County following his resignation. Yokely Jr. is currently held at the New Hanover County Detention Center, with bond set at $100,000.
