Investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Marriage Raises Questions
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security, during the administration of former President Barack Obama, discovered evidence suggesting that Representative Ilhan Omar may have married a man believed to be her brother to facilitate his green card acquisition. This information comes from a report by The New York Times.
On Thursday, the report indicated that in 2016, evidence was found that pointed to the potential fraudulence of Omar’s marriage. This was based on insights from interviews with several current and former officials — a mix of those familiar with ongoing investigations and others who were part of the earlier 2016 inquiry.
Recent findings disclosed that Omar’s real name might be Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, as stated by the Department of Justice. Investigators identified documents showing that her last name was the same as her ex-husband, who is also alleged to be her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.
Whispers about Omar’s supposed marriage fraud, which is a felony, surfaced around ten years ago during her congressional campaign in 2016. Back then, various Somali community forums and some conservative media outlets suggested that she had married a relative, the NYT noted.
Omar has consistently dismissed these allegations, calling them a right-wing conspiracy that was supposedly debunked in 2016. Nevertheless, the case did not progress because prosecutors determined that the purported crime occurred beyond the applicable five-year statute of limitations.
Reports indicated that federal agents in Minnesota found that Ahmed Elmi was granted a provisional two-year green card based on his marriage to Omar. When he later sought permanent resident status, immigration officials asked for further verification of the marriage’s authenticity. Consequently, Elmi abandoned his pursuit and left the United States.
In her 2020 memoir, Omar recounted having been married three times. She mentioned her first marriage to fellow Somali immigrant Ahmed Hirsi in a religious ceremony back in 2001, although they did not file any legal papers for that union. Hirsi is the father of her three children — Isra, Adnan, and Ilwad Hirsi.
Omar described her second marriage as a hasty elopement to a British man in 2009. While it seems this was in reference to Elmi, she did not mention his name. Intriguingly, despite being an observant Muslim, they had their marriage certificate signed by a Christian pastor instead of an imam, as noted by the NYT.
A separate investigation into campaign finances revealed that while still married to Elmi, Omar filed joint federal tax returns with Hirsi in 2014 and 2015. Although she later corrected the tax submissions, she did not clarify why discrepancies existed.
The marriage to Elmi was officially dissolved in 2017, with documents suggesting they had not been in contact for several years.
Omar and Hirsi later legally married in 2018 but divorced the following year, as evidenced by marriage and court records.
In 2020, she shared that she had married a political consultant for her campaign, Tim Mynett.
In response to renewed scrutiny about her marriage history, spokeswoman Jackie Rogers stated, “Rep. Omar has repeatedly and unequivocally denied this baseless, disgusting conspiracy theory. This is a desperate political smear designed to distract from Trump’s failed presidency and two years of Republican failure in Congress.”
