UN Warns of Terrorist Threats from AI-Driven Vehicles
According to a UN report, there’s a significant risk that terrorists could hijack AI-powered vehicles to execute large-scale attacks, eliminating the need for traditional methods like suicide bombings.
The document, titled Algorithms and Terrorism: Malicious Use of Artificial Intelligence for the Purpose of Terrorists, highlights how extremists might weaponize AI technologies. This is reportedly the initial examination of the subject by The era.
Self-driving cars, drones, and similar automated systems could be commandeered by terrorists, posing deadly risks in crowded public areas.
The UN’s Terrorist Agency noted, “For quite some time, vehicles such as cars, vans, and trucks have been employed in terrorist incidents.” They added that the growing autonomy of vehicles might facilitate traditional attack methods being carried out remotely, making them more appealing to terrorist groups.
The report further warns, “This should act as an early alert regarding the potential misuse of AI by terrorists, encouraging global communities, industries, and governments to proactively consider measures to prevent new technologies from causing harm.”
William Allchorn, a senior researcher at the International Policing and Public Protection Research Institute, emphasized the urgency for UK security forces to prepare for potential attacks involving AI.
He remarked that the possibility of targeted assaults utilizing hijacked or DIY autonomous vehicles should be considered a medium to high threat by UK national security in the next five to ten years.
Allchorn noted, “It’s a serious concern that terrorist groups might exploit AI-driven vehicles for mass casualty incidents, with the threat level currently being somewhat manageable, yet likely to escalate as technology evolves.”
