The Navy SEAL team that killed Osama bin Laden has been training for more than a year to help Taiwan prepare for a Chinese invasion, according to a new report.

Members of SEAL Team 6, one of only two ultra-elite “Tier 1” special operations units in the United States, are preparing to deploy to Taiwan in case the Chinese People's Liberation Army crosses the Taiwan Strait and invades the island, the State Department said. Financial Times.

Meanwhile, details of the training taking place at the team's secret base at Dam Neck near Virginia Beach, and how the commandos would be used in the event of war, remain top secret, according to the media.

SEAL Team Six is often tasked with carrying out some of the most difficult and dangerous missions around the world.

The unit is also known for rescuing the American captain of the container ship Richard Phillips, who was taken hostage by Somali pirates in 2009, an incident that was featured in the Tom Hanks film ““Captain Phillips”

Two years later, the SEAL teams' legacy was cemented when they carried out a daring nighttime raid on bin Laden's Pakistan compound in 2011, killing the terrorist behind the al-Qaida 9/11 attacks.

The Pentagon regularly sends other special operations forces to help train and strengthen Taiwan's military, but the Pentagon says all units “train for a wide range of contingencies.”

Meanwhile, while the United States has previously emphasized that war with China is “neither imminent nor inevitable,” the U.S. military has significantly strengthened its contingency preparations since 2021, when then-Commander of the Indo-Pacific Command, Phil Davidson, warned that China could attack Taiwan within six years.

And last year the CIA sounded a similar warning when it released a report saying that Chinese President Xi Jinping had ordered the military to be capable of invading Taiwan by 2027.

Beijing considers Taiwan a renegade province that must be reunited under the Communist Party of China's banner by any means necessary.

Additionally, under the Taiwan Relations Act, the United States is obligated to help Taiwan defend itself against China.

Since taking office, the Biden administration has said U.S. military forces would come to the rescue of China if it invades.

However, given its policy of “strategic ambiguity” toward Taiwan, it is unclear whether the United States will enter into hostilities with China.

After China conducted major military exercises this summer, U.S. Navy Admiral Samuel Paparo warned that the United States would destroy any foreign forces attempting to invade through the Taiwan Strait, saying the area would become a “hellscape.”

The Chinese Embassy in Washington has warned the United States to stop military actions around Taiwan.
