On Monday, the now-deceased assailant, Natalie Rapnow, 15, opened fire at a Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin, killing a substitute teacher and a student and injuring at least five others before taking her own life. It stopped.
Authorities have not yet released the victims, a possible motive, or the gunman's rumored manifesto.
The substitute teacher was reportedly instructing students in study hall when Lupnow started firing.
“The teacher died protecting [the] class. Many more lives could have been lost. she [Rupnow] said Lindsey O'Connor, whose daughter and son both attend the school.
O'Connor said Rapnow was “a very self-centered person” who was known to wear “a collared shirt, tie, jeans and combat boots” to school. She also said that Rapunau didn't have many friends and had always been “very isolated.”
O'Connor added that Rapnow allegedly told another teacher that she had to go to the nurse's office before participating in the murder, but it's unclear whether she actually went to the nurse's office.
