California Democrats Respond to Nurse’s Murder

In the wake of a Minnesota nurse’s murder, California Democrats are intensifying their push against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, vowing to prosecute any federal agents who act improperly.

Representative Ro Khanna visited Minneapolis recently to express gratitude to protesters and garner support for his immigration policies. He has become one of many Democrats advocating for the prosecution of “criminal” ICE agents. Khanna stated, “This madness can only be stopped if Congress fights it with every legal means at its disposal, including litigation in the courts.”

Khanna’s agenda includes defunding ICE and the Department of Homeland Security. Reports indicate he also called for the impeachment of U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem following the unrest in Minnesota.

Similarly, East Bay Representative Eric Swalwell recently declared during a gubernatorial debate that he would leverage “every authority” to strip ICE officers of their driver’s licenses and prosecute them.

Swalwell stated, “I will direct law enforcement to use all their powers to prosecute [ICE officers] for assault, false imprisonment, and murder.”

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins emphasized the need for local prosecutors, especially in Democratic-led cities, to brace for an increase in federal law enforcement activities. She mentioned that federal immigration agents often operate under the mistaken belief that they hold absolute immunity, which isn’t a true legal concept.

Recently, House Democrats attempted to block a spending bill that allocated $10 billion for ICE, but it passed with a vote of 220-207, with only seven Democrats supporting the bill. Khanna, Swalwell, and their colleagues opposed the funding.

As the Senate prepared to vote to prevent a partial government shutdown, Senate Democrats, including Adam Schiff, expressed their commitment to blocking funding for President Trump’s immigration policies, even at the risk of a government shutdown.

“I will not give a dime to ICE or Border Patrol,” Schiff stated. He added that those who support additional funding would bear responsibility for the consequences, which he feared would lead to more deaths in American cities.

The California Legislature has made attempts to limit ICE’s power, though some initiatives have faced legal setbacks. Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation last year that bans law enforcement officers, including federal immigration agents, from wearing masks or face coverings while on duty. Los Angeles’ Progressive Board of Supervisors enacted a similar measure.

The Trump administration, meanwhile, has rejected these state-level efforts, arguing that such restrictions jeopardize the safety of police officers.
