Republican attorney general out of step with GOP on religious charter school debate

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral debate later this month about Republican Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond becoming the first religious public charter school in the country in an incident that found conflict with his own party.

Drummond argues that “state-sponsored and taxpayer-funded religious public charter schools” are unconstitutional, but conservatives have come together to support St. Isidor, a virtual Seville Catholic school.

“It is no secret that parents want to educate their children in line with their values, and the public interest should not be denied by people based on their religion. The outcome of this incident is revolutionary for religious freedom and freedom of education, and Oklahoma told R-Okla, a spokesman for Kevin Stitt Gov. Kevin Stitt.

When asked by Fox News Digital, why Drummond, who is campaigning to become Drummond’s next governor, is in conflict with conservatives on the issue, Drummond’s communications director, told Fox News Digital, “AG Drummond doesn’t make decisions based on the ideas of other politicians.”

“Attorney General Drummond is not led by political pressure. He is led by the law,” Drummond’s Governor’s Campaign Manager Stephanie Alexander added in a statement to Fox News Digital. “His constitutional obligation is to defend Oklahoma’s law, and state law is clear. Public funds cannot be used for religious indoctrination. As the state’s highest legal officer, he will fulfill his duties and will ultimately comply with the decisions made by the U.S. Supreme Court.”

The discussion began in June 2023, when the virtual charter school boards across Oklahoma approved St. Issidor’s contract request. Drummond filed a lawsuit His position was later declared by the Oklahoma Supreme Court in October to the statewide virtual charter school board.
