Republican bill aims to change the name of the Kennedy Center to Trump

Proposed Name Change for Kennedy Center Sparks Controversy

A recent bill introduced by Rep. Bob Onder from Missouri aims to rename the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as the “Donald J. Trump Center for the Performing Arts.” This move seeks to strip the venue of its connection to the former president and honor the current one.

While remarks from both Onder and representatives from the Kennedy Center were not immediately available, the bill comes following the Budget Committee’s approval of an amendment earlier this month to rename certain areas inside the Kennedy Center.

Rep. Mike Simpson from Idaho expressed that naming a potential opera house after Trump would be a meaningful recognition of Melania Trump’s support for the arts. However, the proposal has met strong opposition. One notable critic is Jack Schlossberg, grandson of John F. Kennedy, who voiced concerns about how the change reflects on the nation. “The nation is revealed not only by the men it produces but also by the men it respects,” he stated.

Schlossberg criticized the Trump administration, describing it as one that represents “freedom of oppression, not expression.” This critique underscores a broader dissatisfaction with Trump’s approach to cultural institutions.

In a notable incident, Trump had previously overhauled the Kennedy Center’s board and accused its chairman of misconduct. Following a visit to the center, he commented on its condition, calling it a representation of the country and expressing intentions to rectify what he perceived as issues.

Opened to the public in 1971, the Kennedy Center has long been viewed as a vital part of the nation’s artistic landscape. After President Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, Congress designated the National Cultural Center as a tribute to him, with President Johnson signing the law to cement this living memorial.
