Don Tracy Selected as GOP Candidate for Illinois Senate Seat
On Tuesday, the Illinois Republican Party chose Don Tracy as its candidate for the Senate seat left open by the retirement of Sen. Dick Durbin. His decision not to seek reelection marks a significant shift in a state historically dominated by Democrats at the federal level.
Tracy, a former chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, quickly established himself as a leading contender, particularly in fundraising efforts. His campaign is centered on reducing the cost of living, emphasizing competition in the market, enhancing consumer choice, and negotiating lower prescription drug prices.
This position is now available after Durbin, who has served since 1996, announced that he would not run for another term in 2026. His retirement has sparked a competitive race for one of Illinois’ most notable political offices.
Amid a crowded Republican primary that included candidates like attorney Jeannie Evans, businesswoman Casey Klebeck, and others, voting in Illinois concluded on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Central Time.
Looking at the Democratic side, Rep. Robin Kelly, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton are all in the running to replace Durbin. Governor JB Pritzker has invested considerably in Stratton’s campaign, seen as a potential presidential candidate for 2028. In the wider political landscape, Pritzker has emerged as a leading figure against Trump’s policies, boosting his national profile over the past year.
Conversely, Krishnamoorthi seems to have an edge in fundraising, backed by significant advertising investments and support from a super PAC associated with crypto industry leaders. Tracy now shifts his focus to the general election, gearing up to challenge in a landscape where no Republican has secured a statewide victory in over a decade. This means that the Democratic candidate will likely enter the general election as the clear favorite.
