Republican gubernatorial primary in New Mexico resolved in open contest

Analyzing President Trump’s impact on the Republican Party in national primaries

President Donald Trump continues to exert significant influence over the Republican primaries, ensuring that his chosen candidates emerged victorious in the 2026 primary season. Joe Concha notes that the Republican Party is now recognized as “the MAGA party.” A notable example of this trend is the Texas primary, where former Sen. John Cornyn was defeated by Trump supporter Ken Paxton, highlighting Trump’s ongoing clout.

In New Mexico, former Rio Rancho Mayor Greg Hull has secured the Republican nomination for the open gubernatorial race. Hull entered the election as a strong candidate, promoting themes of public safety, government experience, and economic development.

He won against businessman Doug Turner and former New Mexico Human Services Secretary Duke Rodriguez. Turner presented himself as a conservative who is pro-business and focused on employment and educational reform, while Rodriguez emphasized issues related to addiction treatment, healthcare, and government reform.

Throughout his campaign, Hull criticized the Democratic leadership in Santa Fe, asserting that New Mexico requires a more assertive approach to tackling violent crime, fentanyl trafficking, and border security.

Hull’s victory appears to cement Republican support for a candidate viewed as a viable state contender ahead of the November elections. He is set to face Deb Haaland, former Secretary of the Interior under President Joe Biden, as Republicans aim to reclaim New Mexico’s governorship for the first time since 2019. This gubernatorial contest is anticipated to be one of the most significant political events in the state in 2026.
