Republican lawmaker criticizes Democrats regarding conditions for ICE detainees at New Jersey facility

New Jersey Lawmaker Criticizes Democratic Approach to Immigration

During a recent exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, New Jersey Republican Rep. Paul Kanitra condemned the Democratic Party’s approach to immigration while visiting Delaney Hall in Newark amidst protests against ICE. He expressed that the situation, which has sparked ongoing demonstrations, is a consequence of Democratic policies.

Kanitra characterized the demands from Democratic leaders, including Governor Mikie Sherrill and Senator Cory Booker, for improved conditions for undocumented immigrants as “five-star accommodations.” Following their protest outside the ICE facility, Kanitra labeled their handling of illegal immigration as “disgraceful.”

“Democrats have misused every legal avenue to create this chaos,” he remarked, criticizing Governor Sherrill for enacting several controversial bills shortly after taking office that protect undocumented immigrants and limit ICE’s visibility. He noted that while Sherrill promotes benefits for these immigrants, she’s seemingly avoiding any accountability.

Meanwhile, Democrats and protestors have raised concerns about the treatment of detainees at the Newark facility, claiming they are enduring inhumane conditions that have even led to hunger strikes.

Cheryl, a protestor, shared her experience on social media, lamenting her inability to enter Delaney Hall after hearing troubling reports about safety and legality there. She questioned what authorities might be hiding from public scrutiny.

The Department of Homeland Security rejected claims about poor conditions and denied that a hunger strike was taking place.

Kanitra suggested that Sherrill’s appearance at the protest was merely a publicity stunt to divert attention from the policies that led to the current situation. He sarcastically remarked that the food service provider for Delaney Hall also caters premium suites at MetLife Stadium, implying that if conditions are suitable for high-paying clients, they should be acceptable for detainees as well.

He agreed that transparency should be ensured, advocating for public access to ICE facilities to counter what he termed “unsubstantiated claims” made by critics. Kanitra maintained that those in detention should not anticipate luxury accommodations, stating, “You shouldn’t expect five-star accommodations here in New Jersey.”

On the other side of the debate, protestor Diana Taber expressed her belief that the conditions in ICE facilities are unjust, emphasizing a sense of betrayal by ICE agents who she feels resemble their local communities. She mentioned the ongoing unity among various advocacy groups, suggesting that they are determined to persist in their movement for justice.

Taber acknowledged the necessity of safeguarding the public but called for alternative methods to address immigration issues, advocating for reforms rather than confinement. She recognized that while some individuals commit serious crimes, there must be a balanced approach to law enforcement that doesn’t disproportionately target specific groups.

In response to the protests, the Department of Homeland Security issued statements asserting that all detainees receive necessary provisions, including daily meals, clean water, clothing, and hygiene products. They claimed that the standards of care in ICE detention are superior to those in many prisons housing American citizens.

Fox News Digital has attempted to contact Governor Sherrill and Senator Booker for their commentary.
