California’s Stance on Women’s Sports and Trans Athletes

California has taken a firm stand alongside President Trump’s administration regarding the protection of women’s sports. Recently, the state declined to follow the Trump administration’s directives related to Title IX, which has raised eyebrows—and it seems they might face scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Justice. This follows a lawsuit launched against Maine for similar reasons back in April.

The tension reached a boiling point as the state’s athletic championships neared in late May, particularly when transgender athletes excelled in a two-girl event. Trump himself addressed the situation, posting lengthy messages on Truth Social aimed at Governor Gavin Newsom amid the ongoing controversy surrounding girls’ athletics.

Republican Representative Kevin Kiley is quite aware of the discomfort his constituents are experiencing. Leading up to the championships, reports circulated about contentious incidents wherein trans athletes participated in high school sports like volleyball, basketball, and cross-country. Kiley emphasized the necessity of monitoring what’s happening in schools, as he believes these issues significantly affect the school environment and influence young people’s views.

Moreover, the involvement of trans athletes has prompted various female athletes in California to voice their concerns. This spring, some athletes donned shirts that stated “Protect Girls Sports” or “Save Girls Sports” during postseason events. Notably, the Stoneridge Christian High School girls’ volleyball team abandoned a playoff game last fall against a team with a trans athlete.

“I think it made a huge difference. The student-athletes are crucial voices for the change we’re starting to see,” Kiley remarked.

In fact, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), the body governing high school sports in the state, confirmed that its staff had provided shirts to athletes displaying messages about protecting girls’ sports during a recent tournament. However, several girl athletes disclosed to media outlets that they did not receive the same directive as other participants who wore shirts that were not school-approved, leading to further complications.

Kiley firmly supports the female athletes in this debate. “That’s absolutely outrageous! They’re not just being denied a fair opportunity to compete, but now their voices are being silenced,” he expressed passionately.

The controversy escalated last fall at California State University when San Jose State University faced national scrutiny for allowing trans athlete Blair Fleming to compete on a women’s volleyball team. Given that California’s universities receive taxpayer funding, Kiley is advocating for accountability similar to what the University of Pennsylvania has recently faced, stressing the need to maintain competition integrity for all student-athletes.

“It’s absurd that this university feels it can undermine the integrity of collegiate competition,” Kiley asserted, noting that San Jose State is currently under investigation by the U.S. Department of Education regarding Title IX compliance.

As the nation braces for potential legal challenges from the DOJ on this matter, Kiley is apprehensive about the ramifications for California, particularly the risk of losing federal funds. He expresses hope that this scenario can be avoided. Other prominent Republican figures in the state, like State Rep. James Gallagher and Kate Sanchez, have also condemned the actions of the California Department of Education and Governor Newsom.

Gallagher remarked that the issue regarding trans athletes in women’s sports has been mishandled: “California is pushing a dangerous agenda of allowing men to compete in women’s sports. It’s about safety and fairness. Director Thurmond and Governor Newsom are jeopardizing school athletic programs across the state for political gain.”

Sanchez further criticized Newsom’s administration for what she sees as a clear violation of Title IX, adding that the failure to protect biological females’ sports is a civil rights issue that could lead to significant financial repercussions for California.

Mark Trammell, CEO of the American Liberty Center, highlighted that while California may assert its views, state actions must align with the law. “Title IX clearly mandates equal opportunities for women and girls,” he stated.
