Republican lawmakers warn Trump and Bondi about Maxwell's pardon

Republican lawmakers are advising President Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi to be cautious about considering pardons for Ghislaine Maxwell, who has been sentenced to 20 years for sex trafficking.

This caution comes after Associate Attorney General Todd Blanche reportedly met Maxwell in Florida to gather insights regarding her knowledge of Epstein’s illicit activities.

With a loud call for transparency, activists are pushing Trump and Bondi to direct the Justice Department to make public all documents related to Epstein.

GOP members express concerns that granting Maxwell leniency might seem like a reward for her cooperation, which could stoke conspiracy theories about governmental cover-ups protecting influential figures involved with Epstein.

A Republican senator, who wished to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the issue, remarked, “Supporting someone who facilitated sex trafficking is absurd.” They emphasized that Maxwell’s actions involving minors are inexcusable, suggesting that nothing she could say would lessen the severity of her crimes.

The senator voiced suspicion that Maxwell would have a motive to mislead in order to secure a reduced sentence, particularly given her history of lying under oath—a reference to past perjury allegations from 2016.

Sen. Tom Tillis (R-NC), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, pointed out that although the perjury charges were dropped, Maxwell’s credibility remains in question. “If she’s known to lie, why would she stop?” he questioned, asserting her testimony can’t be trusted.

Blanche’s meeting with Maxwell took place on July 24th and 25th, focusing on Epstein’s crimes and potential links to other individuals. He noted on social media that justice is not selective.

In a letter to Congress, Maxwell’s lawyer indicated that if she receives leniency, she would be willing to testify openly about Epstein. However, Maxwell reportedly did not ask Blanche for a pardon, though she is seeking some form of relief from her prison sentence.

Her legal team is currently appealing her 2021 conviction at the Supreme Court. Recently, prison officials confirmed that she has been transferred from a federal prison in Florida to a lower-security facility in Texas.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) expressed uncertainty about what Maxwell might offer in her conversation with the Justice Department. She raised concerns that Maxwell’s potential testimony might not justify significant sentence reductions.

Meanwhile, Sen. Mike Round (R-SD) emphasized the need for Trump and Bondi to have a solid explanation if they consider pardoning her. He acknowledged the challenge of justifying such a decision but noted that it is within the president’s legal powers.

Trump indicated in a recent interview that he had not been approached about pardoning Maxwell, though he asserted that he has the authority to do so. He mentioned that Blanche believed a meeting with Maxwell was necessary to protect the innocent.

Last month, the president faced backlash from activists within his own base after the Justice Department and FBI disclosed limited information, prompting criticism regarding the lack of transparency in the Epstein case.

Recently, reports indicated that Trump was informed by Bondy and her team that his name appeared in the Epstein files, raising concerns among Democrats who are keen to leverage the scandal against Republicans.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer criticized Blanche’s engagement with Maxwell, suggesting that Trump might consider offering her a pardon in exchange for her silence or false statements supporting him.

Schumer declared, “It’s unacceptable. We cannot allow this to become another cover-up.” Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader John Tune (R-SD) expressed skepticism about the likelihood of a pardon for Maxwell, stating that she may face a lengthy prison term.
