AI Mock Debate Sparks Controversy in Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor Race

John Reed, a conservative businessman and broadcaster, has turned to artificial intelligence to stage a mock debate representing his Democratic opponent, Ghazala Hashmi, for the upcoming 2025 lieutenant governor election. Reed, who is running as a Republican candidate from Richmond, has participated in various regional debates across Virginia. Interestingly, Hashmi, a state senator from Chesterfield, has opted out of debating among the six candidates vying for the statewide position.

Reed’s team clarified that the AI was designed to mimic only Hashmi’s likeness and voice, alongside that of the moderator. The responses were crafted based on Hashmi’s previous statements and policy positions.

Hashmi’s campaign quickly labeled the video a “deepfake,” framing it as a “desperate move straight out of Donald Trump’s playbook,” as reported by the Washington Post.

Reed has defended his approach, noting that while “AI Gazala” articulated her views, including her commitment to public education and reproductive rights, it highlights what he considers the “dirty tricks” overshadowing genuine governance.

The AI-generated debate stands out from other recent AI videos, which have often taken on a more exaggerated or cartoonish style. For instance, earlier this month, a video shared by Donald Trump depicted House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in a sombrero with “La Cucaracha” playing in the background, showcasing a fake quote from Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer.

In her opening remarks, “AI Hashmi” declared she is running to provide Virginians with the experience, knowledge, and capability to advocate for their needs. She boasted about a successful track record addressing key issues such as education and healthcare, asserting she aims to set Virginia as a model for other states.

In response, Reed emphasized that the real Hashmi’s absence from the actual debates raises questions about her commitment to the role. He stated, “If she is not willing to participate in her own campaign for the government, I don’t understand why anyone would think she would be able to fight for anything.” He also criticized her stance during the pandemic, claiming she advocated for extended school closures and pushed policies he views negatively, such as tax increases and early criminal releases.

Reed contended that his background in Congress and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce equips him with insights into what businesses need from Virginia’s government, further emphasizing that the lieutenant governor’s role is crucial for the state’s governance.
