Trump’s Influence in NYC Mayoral Race Sparks Reactions
Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa expressed concerns about President Trump’s potential interference in New York City’s election, stating it might backfire on Democratic contender Zoran Mamdani.
During an interview with Fox 5’s Morgan McKay on “Political Unusual,” Sliwa remarked, “It’s not going to help if he gets involved in New York City.” He added, “Every day, it’s Trump against Zoran Mamdani. Whenever Cuomo and Adams discuss him, it seems like a good day for Mamdani.”
The competition for the New York City mayoralty has heightened tensions, especially after Mamdani unexpectedly triumphed in the Democratic primary against Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is now navigating politics independently alongside current NYC Mayor Eric Adams.
Trump has been openly critical of Mamdani, labeling him a “communist madman” and warning that if Mamdani wins in November, “he’s going to have big problems.”
According to a report by The New York Times, Trump had several conversations with Cuomo and was contemplating his involvement in the mayoral contest.
Sliwa, the sole Republican candidate, expressed little surprise at Trump’s engagement with Cuomo, citing their long-term communication. He suggested, “I’ll focus on the geopolitical issues that affect all Americans. This election in New York City won’t influence the majority of Americans.”
Other candidates also criticized Trump’s potential involvement. Mamdani took to X to voice his discontent, stating, “I’ve learned that Andrew Cuomo is in direct coordination with Donald Trump, even after the president has harmed our communities and undermined vital social services that many rely on.” He deemed this a “betrayal of our city.”
In response, Cuomo rejected the reports about his association with Trump, stating, “I can’t recall the last time I spoke with President Trump.” At a press conference, he added, “I have never discussed the mayoral race with him.”
Sliwa has previously targeted Mamdani, criticizing Adams’ tenure and linking it to Mamdani’s Democratic primary success. He remarked, “If Eric Adams had done a decent job, there wouldn’t be a Zoran Mamdani.”
