Texas Lawmakers Seek Investigation into National Lawyers Guild

Texas Republican lawmakers made a request to the Justice Department on Friday, urging it to investigate the National Lawyers Guild (NLG). They expressed concerns that the legal group’s activities might go beyond simply defending rioters in court and could involve supporting violence linked to Antifa.

Congressman Lance Gooden stated in a letter to the Justice Department that the NLG has “close ties to left-wing extremists and domestic terrorist organizations like Antifa.” He expressed worry that the group’s support for Antifa extremists creates a potential danger to both civilians and law enforcement. Gooden also called for an investigation into the funding behind the Guild.

A spokeswoman for the Justice Department confirmed that they received Gooden’s letter, although there were no additional comments. Fox News Digital reached out to the American Bar Association but did not receive a response.

Contradictory Views on Antifa

Interestingly, some leftist groups argue that Antifa is not a legitimate organization, dismissing it as a “hoax” despite numerous public incidents involving violence.

Gooden’s request aligns with the Trump administration’s focus on organizations associated with Antifa. In September, President Trump labeled Antifa a “domestic terrorist organization,” accusing its members of inciting violence during protests across the country.

The FBI categorizes Antifa as a decentralized ideology. Critics, however, argue that this classification is misleading. According to the Congressional Research Service, Antifa encompasses a variety of extremist beliefs, mainly linked to anarchism, communism, and socialism. The term “Antifa” was first adopted by a group in Portland in 2007, and there have been instances where individuals with connections to Antifa have faced legal action for violent acts.

Recently, FBI Director Kash Patel indicated that the Bureau had initiated a nationwide inquiry into the funding and organizational efforts tied to Antifa. This announcement came soon after the Justice Department filed terrorism-related charges against individuals accused of being part of an Antifa cell that allegedly engaged in a violent attack on an ICE facility in Texas.

Political Campaigns Against Antifa

Gooden further criticized the National Lawyers Guild, which has previously offered legal support to individuals involved in the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests. He accused the organization of opposing measures aimed at upholding peace and order, such as advocating for the abolition of prisons and opposing stronger penalties for violent demonstrations.

In his letter, Gooden also noted a social media post by journalist Andy Ngo, which featured a video of a protest outside an ICE facility in Portland, where NLG members were reportedly present.

Another video from Ngo showed American Bar Association members urging bystanders to share information about recently arrested individuals. Gooden remarked that the NLG acts as Antifa’s legal arm, helping extremists evade justice.

The National Lawyers Guild has a long history and a significant membership base, along with specific tax designations that Gooden suggests merit federal investigation. The Guild claims it does not fund Antifa, stating that they cannot accept money for mere ideas. They define Antifa as a stance against authoritarianism, asserting they do not accept donations from national or nonprofit organizations.

They further claim that anti-fascists represent the public interest and advocate for community protection against the police’s expansion of training facilities.

Debate Over Free Speech

The comments from the American Bar Association reveal a broader debate on free speech, with advocates expressing concerns that the Trump administration may be targeting individuals who publicly support Antifa and anti-fascism. Hina Shamsi from the ACLU pointed out that labeling Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization infringes on free speech rights. She emphasized the need to protect First Amendment rights for all, regardless of their political views.
