Republican on GOP's Johnson holdouts: 'We find it very irritating'

Rep. Don Bacon (R-Nebraska) expressed frustration Thursday with those who have not yet supported House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) to remain in office.

In an interview with anchor Blake Berman on NewsNation's “The Hill,” Mr. Bacon said he found his and his colleagues' support for Mr. Johnson “very upsetting.”

“We are angry that these people are undermining our leadership and the majority of us who want to get things done, but we have to optimize and we have to find consensus. No,” Bacon said.

Some hardline House conservatives are demanding fairly vague promises from the speaker to gain support on Friday's House speaker election vote.

Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pennsylvania), a former leader of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, said on FOX Business last Friday that he would “keep my options open” when it comes to choosing Speaker of the House.

“Right now, I think Mike has done a great job under tough circumstances, but I'm going to keep my options open. I want to talk to Mike,” Perry said.

In an appearance on NewsNation on Thursday, Bacon said Johnson had “done a great job” in his role.

“He's a good guy,” Bacon said. “He's an honest man and a man of faith. I think he did the best he could in a very small majority.”

Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.), a key holdout in the close race to retain House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), said Thursday she would decide Friday whether to vote for him.

“I'll make it [the] We'll make a decision tomorrow,'' Spartz told reporters at Parliament House, adding that he had met with Johnson and things went well.
