Republican responds to accusation of causing tens of thousands of deaths through opioids

New Jersey Gubernatorial Election Heats Up

In the final stretch of a highly chaotic gubernatorial race in New Jersey, Republican Jack Ciatarelli’s campaign leveled serious accusations against his Democratic rival, Rep. Mikie Sherrill. They claimed she was advancing unfounded assertions that he was responsible for “murdering tens of thousands of people.”

Sherrill, in turn, alleged that Ciatarelli downplayed the opioid crisis through his medical publishing company and accused him of creating an app that directed users to potentially harmful medications. She made these statements during an October 8 debate and reiterated them at a press conference focused on opioid addiction.

“Jack has profited immensely, opioid companies are reaping billions, and tragically, countless New Jerseyans have lost their lives,” Sherrill stated at the press event.

Ciatarelli’s campaign strategist, Chris Russell, responded by urging Sherrill to retract her claims and apologize, asserting that her comments reflect desperation. He further accused her of dishonesty regarding her past, noting her financial dealings and connections to a Naval Academy scandal.

“Her reckless accusation that Jack ‘killed tens of thousands of people, including children,’ has been condemned by journalists and legal experts across the board,” Russell insisted. He emphasized that Ciatarelli’s medical publishing work actually aimed to help individuals suffering from chronic pain find appropriate treatment.

In a pointed counter, Sean Higgins, a spokesperson for Sherrill’s campaign, claimed that Ciatarelli had withheld the truth about benefiting from the opioid crisis, further stating he was hired by an opioid company to create an application guiding users to prescriptions for hydrocodone during the epidemic.

“He’s made millions off the suffering of New Jerseyans and cannot be trusted as governor,” Higgins added.

Faced with these allegations, Ciatarelli indicated he might take legal action against Sherrill for defamation if she continued her attacks.

Despite the threats, Sherrill stood by her accusations during a press conference. She remarked on Ciatarelli’s claims of being a small business owner, suggesting that his response showed hypocrisy regarding his profit from the opioid industry.

When pressed on whether Ciatarelli had effectively admitted to the accusations, Sherrill confidently replied, “Yes. The evidence is quite clear if you look at who’s been funding this crisis.”

On his campaign trail, Ciatarelli refuted Sherrill’s allegations, asserting, “Her entire campaign is built on a foundation of lies about me.” He expressed his intention to focus on his proposed policies, including banning sanctuary jurisdictions for undocumented immigrants, reinstating state employees, appointing a supportive attorney general, reforming education, and repealing the state’s green energy initiative.
