Republican senator opposes important Trump nominee, possibly boosting activist Judge Boasberg.

Senator Tom Tillis Opposes Trump’s Nominee for U.S. Attorney

North Carolina Republican Senator Tom Tillis has announced that he will not back President Donald Trump’s nominee for U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C., Ed Martin.

Following a meeting with Martin on Monday evening, Tillis expressed hesitations regarding Martin’s appointment, citing “concerns related to January 6th.” Martin serves as a lawyer for individuals involved in the January 6 protests and has been a vocal advocate for those he believes were unjustly charged in the aftermath of the riot.

During his remarks, Tillis noted, “I met Mr. Martin. He seems like a decent guy.” He continued, “However, most of my concerns focus on January 6th, and he’s put together a strong argument regarding some of the prosecutions, which I think were perhaps rushed decisions influenced by a moment of high tension. But fundamentally, those who crossed the line should face consequences.” He added that if Martin were to be appointed as U.S. Attorney elsewhere, he might consider supporting him under different circumstances.

Currently, Martin holds the position of interim U.S. Attorney, a role he has maintained since Trump took office. However, his interim tenure is set to come to an end on May 19th. Should the Senate fail to confirm Martin, the decision regarding his replacement will fall to Judge James Boasberg, known for his contentious relationship with Trump’s administration, particularly concerning rulings that have complicated efforts for mass deportations.

With Tillis signaling skepticism about Trump’s agenda, the balance of power in this appointment could lean toward Boasberg’s influence instead.
