Republican senator says he was threatened over potential TikTok ban

Sen. Thom Tillis, RN.C., said Wednesday that he received a voicemail in which someone threatened to “find” and “shoot” him over a possible TikTok ban.

“This is the voicemail my office received last night” Tillis Said in a post on Platform X, formerly known as Twitter. “TikTok’s misinformation campaign is encouraging people to call members of Congress, and those who make these calls and relay threats against elected officials may be committing a federal crime. be.

“Communist and Chinese affiliates demonstrate how dangerous current ownership is,” Tillis continued. “Great job, TikTok.”

In the X post, Tillis also posted an audio purported to be a voicemail in which a voice can be heard saying, “If you ban TikTok, I’ll find you and shoot you.”

“It’s people’s work and it’s my only entertainment,” the audio voice continues. “And people make money there too. That’s how I try to get rich. I’ll shoot you, find you, and chop you up anyway.”

Last week, the House of Representatives passed a bill that would ban China-based parent company ByteDance from the popular social media platform unless it exits the platform within five months. In a notice, TikTok called on users to call Congress to “stop shutting down TikTok,” and said the legislature was “planning a complete ban on TikTok.”

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Mark Warner (D-Va.) said in a press conference Wednesday that he is working to declassify risk information from apps shared with senators. Mr. Warner’s push for declassification is part of his larger support for the bill that passed the House last week.

“It was a very powerful meeting,” Warner said Wednesday after the meeting.

“We want to declassify as much content as possible,” he added. “But I think there was a reason why when this brief went to the House Energy and Commerce Committee, they then voted 50-5 to advance the bill.” he added.
