Forty-five Republican senators have introduced a resolution aimed at blocking the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) universal background check rule.
This rule is scheduled to go into effect on May 20, 2024.
The Senate effort is being led by Sens. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina).

Ironically, the Biden administration is trying to justify the universal background check rule by pointing to the gun laws that Cornyn helped Democrats pass in 2022. Biden administration officials at the Department of Justice (DOJ) argue that this is the case with the Gun Control Act of 2022, the bipartisan Safe Communities Act. , opened the door to the enactment of universal background checks.
Breitbart News reported that Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Texas) and 86 Republican co-sponsors in the House are also pushing for a resolution to block the ATF’s universal background check rule.
Clyde told Breitbart News that “civilians are never forced to jump through unconstitutional hurdles by unelected anti-gun bureaucrats to engage in legal firearms transactions. It shouldn’t be done.” I urge my colleagues in both chambers to support our actions to overturn ATF’s disastrous regulations. ”
