Senate Republicans on Thursday opposed efforts by Democrats to condemn the Trump administration's decision to oppose a UN resolution due to the war in Ukraine at the feet of Russia.
Sen. Reuben Gallego (D-Ariz.) tried to pass a Senate resolution through unanimous consent to look directly at the US vote on Monday.
But that push was hampered by Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Jim Lisch (R-Idaho) opposed it. He did not explain his objection on the floor.
“Let's be clear about this. This is a war that Russia started. Ukraine didn't ask for it, Galego said on the floor. They didn't ask the children to be evacuated and their families torn apart. If Ukraine had that path, this war would have ended years ago.”
“What happened at the UN puts us on the same side as Russia and North Korea. That's not only embarrassing, but it's also dangerous,” he added.
Monday's vote helped solidify the reversal of long-standing US policies regarding the war as President Trump seeks a contract to end the war between the two countries.
After speaking critically about Ukrainian President Voldymi Zelensky in recent weeks, Trump softened his rhetoric on the eve of Zelensky's Friday visit on Thursday, signing a deal on key minerals, effectively linking the two countries in the near future.
