Republicans in Congress expressed relief over the arrest of a suspect linked to the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on Wednesday.
The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was apprehended in southern Utah on Friday morning.
According to Utah Governor Spencer Cox (R), Robinson’s family reached out to a friend who then alerted the authorities. The friend mentioned that Robinson had indicated, perhaps somewhat vaguely, that he was involved in the incident.
The end of a more than 30-hour manhunt was welcomed by GOP members across both chambers of Congress.
Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) praised the effort of local and federal authorities on social media, stating, “Justice is done. We continue to lift Charlie’s family and loved ones in prayer.”
Republicans thanked various law enforcement agencies for their dedication to the case.
One lawmaker, Rep. Rick Crawford (R-AR), emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation and suggested that those responsible should face serious consequences.
Rep. Blake Moore (R-UT) commended the work by Utah’s law enforcement and FBI, expressing gratitude for their diligent pursuit of justice during such tragic circumstances. He added, “My team and I continue to pray for Charlie’s family and loved ones in these unthinkable times.”
Some in the GOP are advocating for a calming of rhetoric from both parties to promote peace.
Rep. Greg Murphy (R-N.C.) remarked on the need for a constructive dialogue in light of the arrest, stressing that differences of opinion shouldn’t be seen as malicious.
Republicans also expressed support for Kirk’s family, including his wife and children.
As investigations continue, some lawmakers remain hopeful for a resolution that will bring solace to Kirk’s family and ensure such tragedies are avoided in the future.
