Texas Senate Race Update

It seems that, for now, the newsletter won’t be published tomorrow since I’ll be out of town celebrating my birthday.

Today, we dive into the Texas Senate race, hear from someone who’s been detained as an illegal alien, share Jill Biden’s take on her husband’s debate skills for 2024, and touch on the ongoing drama at Roland Garros.

Lone Star Lefty

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is moving forward to the general election after winning a tight Senate primary runoff against longtime Republican Sen. John Cornyn. This lines up a critical showdown in November with Democratic state Rep. James Talarico.

The primary competition was intense, and Cornyn, along with his supporters, had been voicing concerns for months about Paxton’s controversial background possibly jeopardizing a seat that has been held by Republicans for quite some time. However, the Republican establishment acted swiftly to settle the internal conflicts. Cornyn conceded and pledged support for the Republican ticket, and despite their previous squabbles, top Texas Republicans, including Governor Greg Abbott and Senator Ted Cruz, have rallied behind Paxton following his victory. Paxton, in turn, expressed gratitude towards Cornyn for his efforts during the party’s fierce internal disputes.

Democrats are optimistic that Paxton’s narrative will pave the way for Talarico, while Republicans believe Texas voters will scrutinize the supposed moderate stance of the Democratic Party, particularly in light of its history of altering biblical interpretations and its progressive principles.

Reporting by Daily Caller has already shed light on Talarico’s unconventional theological and cultural views. For instance, he has claimed that “God is non-binary” and asserted that the Bible supports a “pro-choice” stance on abortion. Moreover, he has linked his faith with climate activism, advocating for measures against greenhouse gases and previously boasting about pushing “#liberalpropaganda” during his time as a public school educator.

Let’s not forget the meat issue. Talarico has been advocating for a no-meat movement in Texas—a state where barbecue holds almost sacred significance. Yet, the Democrats are trying to paint him as a true moderate.

Talarico appears to be backtracking, attempting to reclaim a centrist image, but some of his earlier comments have come across as “deliberately provocative.” He has also accused Paxton’s team of highlighting his “uncomfortable” moments.

While Paxton may have his faults, Talarico’s past statements give Republicans a solid argument. He’s not quite the moderate that the Democrats are hoping Texans will see.
