Republicans reveal the Medicaid section of the Trump tax plan

A new law proposed by House Republicans late Sunday aims to significantly cut Medicaid spending. It introduces additional restrictions for beneficiaries, such as work requirements and more frequent eligibility checks. However, it excludes some of the more contentious changes that have been previously debated.

The legislation is anticipated to be discussed during a lengthy committee meeting on Tuesday, as the House Energy and Commerce Committee prepares to move forward with the measures. This development seems to align more closely with the party’s moderate members rather than the conservatives who were dissatisfied with more extreme cuts proposed for the program.

Notably, the law does not impose a cap on federal Medicaid spending for individuals, nor does it include reductions in federal funds to states. Both of these provisions were removed due to conservative opposition.

Moderate Republicans within the party have expressed disapproval of any laws that would slash Medicaid benefits. While President Trump has consistently pledged to protect Medicaid, he hasn’t specified the type of policies he would endorse.

Medicaid has become a significant issue in the ongoing legislative efforts as Republicans work to support President Trump’s domestic agenda.

The Energy and Commerce Committee is responsible for identifying $880 billion in savings as part of a broader goal to cut at least $1.5 trillion to fund Trump’s domestic priorities, which include extending the 2017 tax cut.
